Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Sunday Service celebrates Johnny Dodds - Jan. 23

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

Indigo Stomp from 1929, a Dodds' trio recording with Lil Armstrong (Hardin) and an unknown bass player, opened today's programme. Preacher Cox dedicated today's service to Keith Nichols, described by our host as 'a font of knowledge' when it came to early jazz matters. The Armstrong connection continued with Perdido Street Blues and a counter melody rendition of High Society (Cox saying we had to imagine a band around him). At this point no fewer than 112 Facebook parishioners were watching on.

Cox has the knack of playing and interacting with his online flock making for a seamless performance across the hour. House Rent Blues with introductory comment thanking Pete Lay for invaluable information about several of today's numbers. Time for a request...Too Tight for friend of BSH, Patti Durham. Time for a vocal from 1927 when Dodds was working with Kid OryMy Baby, Cox momentarily putting aside his liquorice stick to hand clap the time. Excellent. Oriental Man from the same recording session, another request, this time for John Dale. Once in a While from 1937 (a chart-topper for Tommy Dorsey), fluent as you like! Cox had been busy messaging friends across the world - Aussie Michael McQuaid (London resident) and Marla Dixon (New Orleans) - seeking nuggets of information regarding several tunes, Ain't Nobody Home but Me (Memphis Minnie?), a case in point, with great vocals from our man.

To close today's session, a Johnny Dodds original - Oh! Lizzie (A Lovers' Lament). It had been another uplifting service, more next week with the music of Jimmie Noone.

"Indigo Stomp" by the Johnny Dodds Trio was recorded in Chicago on Feb. 7, 1929 with Bill Johnson on bass. Info from Jazz Directory Vol. 2 (C - D).
