Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

It's Stay Home, Tune In January

A return to live gigs isn't too far away but for now stay home and on Sundays tune in to afternoon and evening live streams. Newcastle's Jazz Co-op and Prohibition Bar have a programme of live stream concerts in place throughout January. Add a top class session from London and one from NYC and they'll keep you occupied this and every Sunday until further notice.
Newcastle Jazz Co-op continues to present professionally produced live streams at eight o'clock on Sundays with one or two other sessions of interest during the month. The schedule is is as follows:

FRI 8 The Often Herd (folk, inc. Sam Quintana, bass)

SAT 9 Miss Mary & the Mr Rights (rockabilly)

SUN 10 (3:00pm) Mainly Two: Marie Schreer & John Garner (classical & beyond violin virtuosi)

SUN 10 Bossa Trio (Sergio Prazares, guitar, Nick Gould tenor sax, Kevin Dorrian drums & percussion) Nick and Kevin (JazzMain) are familar faces making a welcome return to Tyneside

SAT 16 Chris James (top class finger-pickin' country blues)

SUN 17 Four in One (ace Leeds-based quartet: Jamil Sheriff piano, Will Howard tenor sax, Sam Quintana bass, Steve Hanley drums)

FRI 22 Rob Heron & the Tea Pad Orchestra (Western swing, blues & hokum, the Tea Pads never fail to deliver)

SUN 24 Hot Club du Nord (Hot Club at its best: Emma Fisk violin, Dave Harris guitar, Bradley Johnston guitar, Bruce Rollo bass)

SUN 31 Harry Keeble Quartet (all star quartet: Harry Keeble tenor sax, Mark Williams guitar, Andy Champion bass, Abbie Finn drums)

Up the Road at Prohibition Bar proprietor Mitch Mitchell isn't going to be deterred by the little matter of a pandemic. The doors, virtually, of course, will be open every Sunday at three o'clock.

Starting tomorrow (SUN 3), The Gospel According to Jon Lee presents Staggerin' Jon Lee  joined by fellow guitarist Clive Davies and one M. Mitchell, drums.

Jan 10 Julija Jacenaite Tyneside's favourite Lithuanian singer.

Jan 17 Teresa Danby Bert Louissen (pictured) return with their take on classic pop, soul and jazz standards.

Jan 24 Anth Purdy self-styled Swing Jazz Guitar with a liking for Charlie Christian and Les Paul.

And there is a national and international dimension to live stream Sundays. At one o'clock don't miss Adrian Cox's Sunday Service (clarinetist Cox plus guest) and at half past seven Glenn Crytzer live streams from New York City.
