This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. A Sunday Service for Pete Fountain - Jan. 17

This week, Pete Fountain. Adrian Cox' s clarinet teacher Jack Gilbert was a big fan of the clarinetist so it was about time the man from New Orleans got a Sunday Service to himself. The World is Waiting for a Sunrise, for starters. Very apt said our host, live streaming all on his lonesome from Toulouse Lautrec, London. Fountain's album with Al Hirt, New Orleans, proved a source of inspiration for this week's masterclass in jazz clarinet. 

A few minutes in, Cox thanked nigh on one hundred folk for tuning in. The first of three numbers from Fountain's 1959 album The Blues heard Cox playing My Inspiration and straight on to Wang Wang Blues and the third of the tunes, Blue Fountain. It seems Cox learns some of the tunes during the week, committing them to memory. Quite a feat! 

Basin St Blues kept Cox firmly rooted in the Big Easy, our man's vocals a treat. Looking at his watch, Cox exclaimed: Doesn't time fly when you're having a good time? Time for a couple more, first Tiger Rag, taken at an impossible tempo, Cox singing, feet-tapping, finger snapping, and to close, Moanin' Low (comp. Rainger/Dietz) , recorded by several legendary names - Annette Hanshaw, Billie and Ella, to name but three. Next week's sermon: Johnny Dodds.
