This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Wave Magnetik (take two), Newcastle University - Nov. 26

Wave Magnetik (trumpet, dj, vocals)

Earlier in the day, at precisely 1:15pm, Newcastle University's lunchtime live stream concert wasn't readily accessible. A 'sign in' instruction wasn't quite what was expected. Your reviewer logged-off, did others do the same? At some point during the afternoon the on-screen 'sign in' instruction disappeared, replaced by a more inviting NO THANKS click option which made the YouTube content instantly accessible.* 
And so to Wave Magnetik. Composer, producer, trumpeter, vocalist and dj, WM (aka Donald Malloy) presented an engaging performance, immersed in an ever-changing (looping) kaleidoscopic landscape. Clip-mic trumpet in hand, off-screen computer technology at arm's length, vocal mic to one side, our solo performer danced his way through three quarters of an hour of constantly changing beats. 

Broadly adhering to the published set list - Show Me the Way, Take No Prisoners, Star Child, Brass Love - Wave Magnetik drew upon a plethora of source material. Late period, distorted wah-wah pedal Miles (one for the jazz fan), a trillion BPM (beats per minute) soundscape punctuated by dj exhortations (Get up! Now shake yer butt) to an adoring online audience which readily 'gets' the likes of Robert Glasper, Flying Lotus and Roy Hargrove.
