This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Andy Davies Quartet live streaming from Ronnie Scott's - Nov. 19

Andy Davies (trumpet); Rick Simpson (piano); Daisy George (double bass); Jas Kayser (drums) 

This was a session and a half! Choice material played by four great musicians. Welshman Davies certainly can play but he didn't hog the limelight, far from it, giving equal space to his band mates - Guisborough's Rick Simpson,  the brilliant Daisy George and the new kid on the block, the fabulous Jas Kayser. 
You Stepped Out of a Dream opened the set suggesting this would be one to savour. Moanin' without Lee Morgan's pyrotechnics, Davies his own man, and on to Cedar Walton's Bolivia featuring the first of recent Berklee graduate Kayser's full-formed solos. Davies himself crafted a sublime solo on The Nearness of You and followed up with some Wynton-esque growling trumpet on The Sidewinder. 

Davies said they would be happy to take requests. One such, This I Dig of You, was so good the likelihood is a friend of the band leader set it up for him. Nothing wrong with that, call it initiative! Oh, yes, pianist Rick Simpson shone on this one. Rick himself suggested Spider-Man. Daisy George soloed (great sound all night), as did Rick. Excellent.

To close, Speak Low. Davies wandered on and off stage during the live stream, stepping up as and when required, the trio centre stage, Kayser a real find. If you're in need of a bass and drums team, Daisy and Jas are the girls to call. Blokes in the engine room are ten a penny, move over guys, Daisy and Jas are comin' down the line!
