Abbie Finn Trio: Live stream from the Globe - Nov. 22

Abbie Finn (drums); Harry Keeble (tenor sax); Paul Grainger (bass).

Over on BBC 4 it was the final of the Young Jazz Musician of the Year where five future stars strutted their stuff. Up here in Newcastle, the Jazz Co-op Sunday night series continued with a live stream by the Abbie Finn Trio causing me to wonder why Harry and Abbie weren't down at Cadogan - Paul's grey beard rendered him ineligible. Still, their loss, our gain.

Having heard the trio several times and the individuals many times there were no major surprises apart from learning that Abbie's middle name is Georgia and, coincidentally, she made this revelation after they'd played a beautifully languorous version of Hoagy Carmichael's tune of the same name.

A mix of standards and originals drawn mainly from their recent album Northern Perspective made for a most enjoyable hour plus.

Remember, an Irving Berlin tune that Hank Mobley made his own and one which Harry too has stamped his name on. Love the full title of the song - You Forgot to Remember!

Ginnungagap (or something similar) is a Keeble original. He did explain the title but somebody forgot to remember to give him a mic! Still a good number.

Walkabout had the kind of feel the title implied as did Paul Grainger's Umlazi Morning which I thought was called One Lousy Morning - the dreamy head proved me wrong!

Georgia on my Mind and the revelation of Abbie's middle name. She could form another band - The Georgia Finn Band would take the blues clubs by storm with a name like that!

Night and Day; North Meets South; Invitation and the encore, Tangerine. These were my Young Jazz Musicians of the Year - providing Paul invests in a barrel of Grecian 2000.

Sunday Night @ The Globe whether on line or on chair is fast becoming a byline for jazz in Newcastle and, maybe tomorrow, the world!

Next Sunday it's Happiness and Heartbreak!

Lance
