Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Kansas Smitty's play Django - Nov. 12

Giacomo Smith (clarinet); Kourosh Kanani (guitar); Harry Diplock (guitar); Ferg Ireland (double bass).

Kansas Smitty's is live streaming gigs five nights a week from its north London base. Free to access with the option to make a contribution if so desired, the one constant is the sheer quality of performance. Giacomo Smith is invariably involved as he was on this session devoted to Django Reinhardt. Two guitars, bass and clarinet - Allez! Allez!
The all-seated, socially distanced quartet (bassist Ferg Ireland perched on a high stool) performed as if in a Parisian cellar club, pulling up a chair, more or less 'in the round'. BSH knew of Kourosh Kanani's astonishing talent, whereas fellow guitarist Harry Diplock had gone under the radar...until now! Django made it look easy, likewise Kourosh and Harry, both of them members of the London Django Collective. Clarinetist Giacomo made the introductions and when he wasn't dazzling with his liquorice stick he sat listening, no doubt appreciative of two great guitarists.

Giacomo, suited and booted yet suitably casual, pointed to the set list, tonight's concert would focus upon some lesser known numbers associated with Django. Fleche D'orBrazil - Harry taking the kead, Kourosh supplying the rhythm. A nod, a smile, the boys were in their element. Bassist Ferg Ireland works across the spectrum, more contemporary material is well within his compass, yet here he was, playing the classic anchor roll, although when let off the leash - notably on the set closing It's Just One of Those Things - his enviable technique shone through.

For once Kansas Smitty's camera crew didn't quite get it right. As Harry and Kourosh were in full flight there were few close ups showing their masterful playing. Nevertheless, the music was great, Si Tu Savais a highlight, then, at last, Kourosh leading on Viper's Dream. Très bien!
