This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Not Your Daddy's Jazz Band - Tiger Rag (feat. Harvey Wainapel)


I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a record such as this since, say, The Billy Cotton Band Show! Maybe even before. On the plus side, fans of Spike Jones and his City Slickers, Sid Millward and his Nitwits, Dr. Crock and his Crackpots or Peewee Hunt will perhaps see this as the Second Coming oblivious to the fact that, on the minus side, among all the whistles and motor horns, the other noises are of Nick LaRocca, Leon Roppolo, Kid Ory and King Oliver - maybe even Acker Bilk - turning over in their graves! 


In fairness to Aussie bandleader Jimmy Layton, he isn't aiming at challenging anyone from Freddie Keppard to Freddie Hubbard just reminding us that jazz can be fun. Of course, fun isn't always funny and, in this case ... judge for yourself!
