This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Tyneside Talent

Today's edition (Sunday January 12) of Jazz Record Requests (Radio 3) featured a fine selection of numbers. From the opening Bei Mir Bist Du Schön (Benny Goodman) to It's About That Time (Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis) Alyn Shipton introduced classic material and lesser known compositions. Oliver Nelson (Stolen Moments) to Andy Sheppard and Espen Eriksen to Oscar Peterson to Johnny Dodds. And, thanks to a Darlington listener, proudly taking its place in the list...Paul Edis' Ushaw Ensemble (A Shepherd from Melrose)! Listen again via JRR's page on the Beeb's website.  

Radio Tyneside's award-winning programme The Geordie Hour followed JRR. An hour of music from north east born and bred and/or resident musicians is what Gary Hogg's programme is all about. This week's edition opened with a couple of bands familiar to Billy Bootlegger's patrons. First, rockabilly outfit Miss Mary and the Mr Rights then Americana from Guilded Thieves. 

The Doonans (from Hebburn, South Tyneside) with their version of House of the Rising Sun (recorded before the Animals scored a huge chart hit) then Bob Fox with The Hush put three local jazz musicians in the spotlight (Garry Linsley, Neil Harland, Paul Smith).
