Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Matt MacKellar @ The Black Swan - Jan 16

(Preview by Russell)

One of the finest young prospects on the British jazz scene is home for Christmas and before he returns to his studies in America there is one last chance to catch him in action. Drummer Matt MacKellar first came to the attention of BSH as a keen participant at Dave Weisser's weekly 'jazz workshop' at the Chillingham Arms. It was obvious Matt, at the time perhaps 14 or 15, showed immense promise. It wasn't long before Matt was sitting-in at the Jazz Cafe's high octane jam sessions. And, a while later, the Newcastle based drummer was added to the roster of first call musicians to work as a member of the session's house trio.

Now, as an undergraduate at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA, Matt is leading his own Tyneside based quartet playing occasional gigs as and when he is around. Your next opportunity - and the last one for a few months - is at the Black Swan in Newcastle Arts Centre on Thursday 16 January. Matt's quartet is in the A-list category, just look at the names...fellow student Ben Lawrence (Durham University) playing piano, one of Britain's premier bassists Andy Champion and 2019 APPJAG award winning vocalist Zoë Gilby! Hey! No more to be said other than arrive early for an eight o'clock start (doors 7:30).
