Preview: Swing Manouche @ Blaydon Jazz Club - Easter Day (April 21)

(Preview by Russell)

Following last month's hugely successful fundraising concert at the Black Bull it's back to business on Sunday (Easter Day) as Blaydon Jazz Club presents a treat for Djangologists - and jazz fans in general - with an appearance by Swing Manouche.

Djangologist Mick Shoulder first came to prominence on the gypsy jazz scene as leader of Djangology (latterly known as Djangologie). Sold out concerts, an acclaimed album, bassist Shoulder could have rested on his laurels yet he chose to go in another direction, a direction not unfamiliar to Django Reinhardt.

An accomplished string bass player, Shoulder opted to play six strings, in the process recruiting Paul Grainger to take on the bull fiddle anchor role in his new outfit Swing Manouche. Rhythm guitarist extraordinaire Giles Strong joined our County Durham based Djangologist, making it two six-stringers, a bassist and the ever-popular Gavin Lee playing clarinet.

A headline 'name' invariably pulls in the punters, none more so than that of Django Reinhardt. Add the names of Messrs Shoulder, Strong, Grainger and Lee to the publicity and you've got the makings of a full house. Don't forget that Sunday's concert at the Black Bull (Bridge Street, Blaydon NE21 4JJ) starts at the now regular, new time of 7:30pm. Pay on the door (actually pay at the bar, in the lounge), admission is a bargain £7.

Frequent bus services from/to Gateshead and Newcastle will get you to your destination in a matter of minutes with time to catch onward bus/Metro connections on your journey home. Leave the car at home (parking is available if you insist!) enjoy a pint of Black Sheep (your designated driver for the evening can 'enjoy' a soft drink!) and listen to some top class jazz at a grassroots club.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.

Submissions for review

Whilst we appreciate the many emails, texts, messages and other communications we receive requesting album/gig reviews on BSH, regrettably, we are unable to reply to all of them other than those we are able to answer with a positive response.
Similarly, CDs received by post will only be considered if accompanied by sufficient background material.
Finally, bear in mind that this is a jazz-based site when submitting your album.
