Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Off Key Music - open rehearsal at St. Oswald's Church Hall, Hebburn - Feb.10

It had been over 4 years since I last heard Off Key. On that occasion, they gave a concert in the actual church. This morning it was in the adjoining church hall so, as it's on my doorstep and an open rehearsal I decided to drop in.

There have been changes-a-plenty during the intervening years. Whereas previously it was a more big band orientated set up they've now adapted to a brass/wind band format with cornets, Eb bass and tenor horn amongst the flutes, clarinets, saxes and trombone.

Much younger players too although I did spot a few older musicians. One thing in common, enthusiasm - anyone who turns up for a rehearsal at 10:30am on a Sunday morning has got enthusiasm to spare! No prima donnas here.

No jazz either but clever arrangements that were well within the scope of the lead players and not too taxing for the 2nds and 3rds.

Unfair to pass criticism as you don't rehearse the party pieces but concentrate on what will, hopefully, eventually become a signature dish.

Weel May the Wind Blow was a skillfully crafted blend of The Keel Row and Blow the Wind Southerly which, after a few starts and stops, was served to near perfection.

My only regret is I didn't have time to hang around for a bacon sarnie!
