Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Early Birds Flying High @ The Lit & Phil, Newcastle - Feb 9

The Early Bird Band: Paul Edis (MD, piano, tenor sax); Emily McDermott (vocals); Lucien Guest (trumpet); Haaruun Miller (alto sax, soprano sax); Tom Henery (guitar); Alex Shipsey (bass guitar); Dylan Thompson (drums)

It had been a late night for Dr Edis. Gigging 'til late at Opus 4 Jazz Club, pianist and educator Paul Edis was up and about bright and early to meet up with half a dozen Early Birders for an early Saturday morning workshop.

The Lit and Phil's Loftus Room is the regular rehearsal/performance space for the Early Bird Band's rapidly developing young musicians. 9:15am start, set-up and go. Two hours' worth of study then the doors open to a curious public.

Four numbers today, the first of them Harry Edison's Centrepiece. Jambone vocalist Emily McDermott joined the boys - Lucien, Haaruun, Tom, Alex and Dylan - to get her head around Jon Hendricks' lyrics. It should be noted that Ms McDermott is a jazz singer in the making. A crystal-clear voice, as and when Emily discovers her 'jazz voice' we'll have another fine singer on the scene. Perhaps sitting-in at one of the many jam sessions across the region would be of benefit - check 'em out, Emily!

On Green Dolphin Street (heard last night on Alan Barnes' gig - see review), Our Love is Here to Stay (McDermott getting to know Ira Gershwin's lyrics - In time the Rockies may crumble...), the boys in the band shared the solos, both the frontline of trumpeter Lucien Guest and Haaruun Miller playing alto and soprano saxophones, and the ace rhythm section - Tom Henery, guitar, and the excellent bass and drums pairing of Alex Shipsey and Dylan Thompson.

The Early Birds have been working on My Favorite Things. Haaruun tackled the number the last time the Early Birds got together here at the Lit and Phil, and today, with Coltrane's take in mind, he had another go at it. This time he had Emily alongside to add Julie Andrews-like vocals. Now then, about those jam sessions...

So, another productive Saturday morning at the Lit and Phil. There is more to come.
