This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: A Sage Sunday Postmodern Jukebox

This Sunday, February 18, Sage One is going to be full to the rafters for the return visit of Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. A viral internet sensation, Bradlee’s skillful use of social media platforms to promote his arrangements of present-day pop tunes, often in a ragtime or twenties’ jazz age style, has won him literally millions of fans. YouTube hits can be counted in their many tens of millions as the New Jersey-raised pianist and arranger tours the world playing to capacity audiences entranced by his shows which are presented, and viewed, through a sepia-tinted lens.


A twelve-year-old Bradlee was captivated by Rhapsody in Blue. He would later go on to play jazz piano in New York and work in off-Broadway theatre productions. Postmodern Jukebox uses the talents of Bradlee’s many musical associates. One project to the next, one tour to the next, Scott Bradlee employs a bewildering number of musicians and at Sage Gateshead on Sunday (Feb 18) the roll call is likely to include new faces, new names, but the experience will be every bit as good as last time. From All About That (Upright) Bass to a ragtime version of Tainted Love to R.E.M.’s Shiny Happy People performed as a 1940s swing number, this is one show you won’t want to miss.
