Bebop Spoken There

Alan Barnes: "Normally you can cobble a set together with five guys on the back of an envelope over the first pint and it's just fine. Livestreaming isn't like that." - (Jazzwise July 2021)

Mark Pringle / Tom Syson Duo @ The Jazz Cafe January 26

(Review by Steve H/Photo courtesy of Mike Tilley)
Friday nights at the Jazz Cafe have become a bit of thing this year. For the fourth consecutive week, a packed yet wonderfully attentive house enjoyed a great evening. This week differed from previous weeks in that rather than local musicians we were treated to a much acclaimed out of town duo. Award winning pianist Mark Pringle and up and coming star trumpeter Tom Syson had driven from Bedford that day and were indeed travelling straight back after the gig. Hopefully, the guys thought the arduous road trip was as worthwhile as the highly appreciative audience.

The pair conjured up 2 very fine sets of contemporary jazz. Their music very cleverly incorporates original tunes, standards and free improvisation to keep the listener fully engaged at all times.  The technique of both players was absolutely superb and the interplay with each other seemed to be telepathic.
The last 3 pieces of the second set summed up the band perfectly a great free original Windmills oOklahoma followed by a glorious rendition of On the Sunny Side of the Street with marvellous use of the mute by Syson. The final tune, Motion, was by Danish guitarist Jacob Bru. As I Ieft the cafe a fellow audience member said ‘that was beautiful’ I saw no reason to disagree.
