Bebop Spoken There

George Shearing: "Speaking about Johann Sebastian Bach I think he'd be a real jazzer if he were alive today. I mean any man who has two wives, twenty kids, gets kicked out of the church for being too harmonically radical and drinks beer can't be all wrong can he?" - (Crescendo March 1984.)

Lunchtime Jazz at the Lit and Phil – Spring 2017

Paul Edis has kindly sent me details of forthcoming lunchtime gigs at the Lit & Phil.
All Concerts are 1-2pm. Tickets are £5 on the door
27th January - Mark Williams and Joel Byrne-McCullough
Mark and Joel studied together on the BMus Jazz degree at Newcastle college in 2000.
At that point, they were regularly performing as a guitar duo around North East.
Joel has returned to the North East after living in Manchester, and so the duo has picked up where they left off many moons ago. Both are in high demand as session players, working all over the UK and beyond alongside some of the best in the business!

24th February Hand to Mouth
‘Hannon’s voice is soulful, brooding & unselfconscious in its longing…it wasn’t all melancholy; Hannon can swing with the best of them’ (Jazz Journal)
‘Bradley Johnston could cut it with the best of them!’ (Russell Corbett, Bebop Spoken Here)
Both familiar figures on the North East Jazz scene, Lindsay Hannon (vocals) and Bradley Johnston (Guitar) celebrate the great guitar and vocal duos of Joe Pass with Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae.
31st March – Triptych - Edis/Susans/Walker
All three members of this group bring a diverse repertoire and extensive experience to create new interpretations of old standards alongside new compositions, often with a rhythmic twist involving metric modulations, irregular metres and longer forms compositions. Triptych are Paul Edis (piano/clarinet) Rob Walker (drums) and Paul Susans (bass).
