This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Johnston/Edis @ Sage Gateshead

This free concert came out of the blue and provided me with a welcome opportunity to escape house-painting for an hour or so! Coffee and an excellent sandwich at the Concourse café then sit back for thirty minutes or so of top-class jazz served up by two top-class players.
The “mini-set” kicked off with Days of Wine and Roses then kicked on with Wes Montgomery’s West Coast Blues – an apt choice to showcase some fine guitar work.
The mood slowed to a wistful My Funny Valentine then swung away again with Parker’s Donna Lee – or should that be Miles Davis’s?
The final number, Blues for Alice saw Edis letting rip on piano and drew generous applause from the lunching classes all of whom were there by chance rather than by design. One departing punter stopped to thank the musicians for “brightening up (his) day”: another stopped to ask where he might see them again!
More such free mini-concerts are envisaged in future – the next is scheduled for two weeks today. See social media for details.
