Imagine the Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool band 65 years on, having discovered the elixir of youth, and selectively absorbed many of the innovations that had taken place along the way. That would bring you close - but nowhere near close enough to describe this album!
This is cool without being frigid. It's as cool as observing a hot blonde in a mini-skirt on a spring day and searching for the chat-up line. If this music could be converted to words the pair of you would be on your second glass of Pinot by track 3 - roll on track 8 (although, as track 8 is titled DIY, maybe not!) Dame Cleo is quoted as saying: "Some of the most exciting original new music I have heard for a long time."
You nailed it Cleo!
It's as if Gil Evans met Oliver Nelson and Q in a down town bar and said, "Let's write something together that will be as modern as tomorrow but still appeal to the guy we met yesterday!"
They didn't, but Tom Green did!
Tremendous originals that straddle the genres and a unique take on Skylark - Hoagy would have approved.
Solos, ensembles and accessible improv make this CD one to play many times.
The album is due to be released on the Spark Label on Feb. 2, the launch gig is at St. James Studio in Victoria, London on Jan. 29 and the promotional tour kicks off in Bath on Jan. 16.
Feb. 24 is the one for me - Schmazz @ The Jazz Café, Newcastle.
