Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Paul Skerritt Band at the Salsa Café July 5

Paul Skerritt (vocals), James Robson (bass), James Carmichael (drums) & James Harrison (piano)
(Paul should change his name to James and the band could truly become the James Boys!). (Review/photos by John T.)

The place was just beginning to fill up as I arrived for the first set. Paul made great use of his excellent radio mic by going out onto the pavement and singing to passers-by & asking them to come and listen to the band. He was very successful and soon the place was full. Not wishing to be outdone during one number James Harrison also ran out into the street to play an imaginary keyboard for a second or two!!! Talking of keyboards his Nord2 is a lovely machine. James made good use of its control panel on Ain't no Sunshine. Paul has a good mix of numbers and styles in his pad.  The band played them with light and shade – ideal for the small setting.

It’s amazing that there was so much live jazz around the Central Station on a Saturday Night.  Before the gig I caught Jessica Avison singing and playing solo guitar in the Hotel Indigo bar/dinner. At the same time Paul Susans and Mark Williams were playing to a smaller audience at the Jazz Café. Where were all you jazz fans?
