The Lit and Phil was buzzing, an air of anticipation hung in the air, as the audience assembled for this JNE assisted launch of The Lindsay Hannon Plus' CD The Spy. Many of us had been present for the live recording done late last year at the Bridge Hotel so we had a fair idea of what to expect and we got it - did we not!
A laid back double bass introduction interspersed with delicate piano punctuations and tinkling cymbals led eerily, intriguingly, to Lindsay's smoky voiced take on the album's title track -
The Spy. The Doors' classic has all the elements of a novel by Ian Fleming or John le Carré. The build up to the emotional, even violent vocal heights and the gradual release of tension.
Nature Boy, given an up tempo Latin groove sees the whole band digging deep behind Lindsay's lusty vocal. James Harrison clearly relishing the opportunity to stretch out on the Lit and Phil's grand piano. An amazing young talent capable of meeting any challenge head on. John Pope - Premier League bassist - and Tom Chapman, a volcano fermenting, ready to
erupt.
Heather Forever - written by Liz Corney (pianist with Iceni, another of Lindsay's bands) - Joni Mitchell's Hissing of the Summer Lawns; standards such as Love me or Leave me and The End of a Love Affair just some of the gems heard at the concert and on the CD. Others include the enigmatic Old Fashioned Hat - a sultry and sophisticated vocal - Diamonds (Everybody Knows); Wish; So Long, Big Time and Her Eyes are Underneath the Ground.
As well as being a performing artist, Lindsay Hannon is also jazz vocal tutor at Sage Gateshead. Going by tonight's gig or listening to the well produced CD her students couldn't be in better hands.
