Young Italian guitarist Pari sent me this, his début EP, in November last year and, to my eternal shame, I've only just got around to playing it. In my defence it arrived at a time when CDs were arriving by the barrow-load and I tended to give preference to the better known names.
A mistake!
This is a disc I may well be playing long after the hyped up names are forgotten! Pari is both an articulate player and, on the evidence of track 2, Iris, a composer with a melodic flare. The opener, Miles' Solar, reveals this to be a band aware of the bebop tradition but not trapped in a stylistic straight-jacket. Throughout, the emphasis is on making music and improvising as opposed to improv. Fisherman's Horizon is atmospheric capturing a tranquil day by river or calmed sea.
Amarcord, from the Fellini movie, has some probing, almost romantic, soprano from Davy - Sidney Bechet may have sounded like this had he been born 80/90 years later! Pari's blues tinged solo adds to the melancholic feel. Piano, bass and drums feed the front men to perfection and I have only one complaint - it should have been a CD rather than an EP. After the fourth track I was brought down to earth - coitus interruptus!
