CD Review: Beautiful Love: Paulinho Garcia

Paulinho Garcia (acoustic guitar and vocals).
(Review by Ann Alex.)
I’d describe this as a romantic easy-listening CD rather than jazz, one for us ladies to play during a candle-lit evening spent with someone we love, and I’m not talking about your dad or your brother!
Fifteen tracks of mostly jazz standards accompanied by skilful but understated guitar, a few tracks sung in Portuguese and Spanish and also a self-penned song Do You Remember Me?  The whole performance is infused with a ‘latin’ feel, tango and bossa nova, from the opening song by Jobin  Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar right through to the last (folk) song,  Casinha Pequenina.
The songs sung in English sound utterly charming in a Spanish accent.  So we are treated to standards such as When I Fall In Love; Like Someone In Love; Beautiful Love; That Old Feeling; But Beautiful.  Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is a more melancholy, song, sensitively sung (quote ‘but I left my soul behind me in an old cathedral town’). I was surprised but pleased to hear Lionel Bart’s Where Is Love from the musical Oliver, which comes out well with a latin beat.  The jazziest track is Bluesette, with lively guitar and some gentle scat.  Garcia’s voice has pleasing low tones and warm rich higher notes.
Brazilian-born Garcia is not generally known to American jazz audiences although he is a prolific recording artist based in Chicago and is regularly involved in the international concert circuit.  The CD, not surprisingly, is due to be released on Valentine’s day in 2014 on the Jazzmin Records label as a co-production with Shrinktunes Media.
