Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

R.I.P. Eric Clegg.

The sad news has only just reached me of the death of sax/clarinet player Eric Clegg who died on September 30. Best remembered as a member of the Phoenix Jazzmen, the Savoy Jazzmen and later with his wife, singer Carole Clegg, in Speakeasy.
Although thought of as a New Orleans stylist, the first time I heard Eric was at the Bluebell in Felling where he played an excellent version of Johnny Hodges' Sideways.
A fine player who will be sadly missed.
Lance.
PS: In the photo Eric is at the far left of the picture.

Sad news. When I first started to play regularly it was with Clem Avery at the Golden Lion, Winlaton Mill. That weekly session lasted about seven years and for much of it Eric played clarinet. With Clem tpt/vcls, Ronnie Mclean tbn, Chas Coles dms, Johnny Duncan bass. The jazz was in a small cellar type room downstairs, ideal for jazz and always a great atmosphere. Happy times and good memories.

Yes, sad news - Eric used to dep sometimes with the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings. Mike has gone, and now Eric .... but before the WJRK's Eric was a regular on the NE jazz scene, since his 20's. Others memories go way back and for much longer than mine, comparative newcomer on the scene!
