Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Andre Canniere - Coalescence

Andre Canniere (tpt); Ivo Neame (pno/acc); Hannes Riepler (gtr); Ryan Trebilcock (bs); Jon Scott (dms).
(Review by Lance)
Whirlwind seem to be moving rapidly to the forefront of British jazz labels. In recent months the King's Place epicentre has released a number of releases that may well feature in the Album of the Year scenario for those who are looking beyond yesterday but not quite as far forward as late tomorrow.
This is just such a disc.
Canniere moved to London from NYC in 2008 having worked in The Apple with Maria Schneider, Bjorkestra, Ingrid Jensen and others.- how strange that these days they are coming over here!
Canniere has an impressive library of "licks" - no change that to "Phrases" - whatever, he's got them!
Canniere, the blurb tells me, cites 'memory and situations, both dear and dire, in composing for Coalescence. Fracking, US gun culture, the itinerant musician's life, just some of his inspirations. and they come through in this probing experience.
It's good stuff.
Austrian guitarist Riepler is another welcome import and Neame, of course, we know well from Kairos Quartet and Phronesis  - as well as the other projects he often pops up in. Trebilcock? Another who pops up in all sorts of top level gigs and does the business.
Jon Scott's played on 25 albums - need I say more? Well yes I can because his solos and fills are absolutely perfect!
Details and availability from Whirlwind.
Lance.
