Bebop Spoken There

Jennifer Wharton: "People forget that the trombone is so glorious. It can be like going to church, or getting ready for battle. It can be a lot of things....For a longtime I was the only female trombonist in New York," - (DownBeat May 2021)

Sean Noonan’s Bourne to Brew @ The Bridge. April 15

Sean Noonan (drums & vocals) & Matthew Bourne (keyboards)
The Bridge Hotel’s audience first visited the weird world of Brooklyn drummer/vocalist Sean Noonan some twelve months ago and this year’s excursion promised more strange tales of landladies and silkies. Once again Noonan drew heavily on his 2010 CD release Set the Hammer Free. Classics – one hearing confers ‘classic’ status – such as the scary Drunkard Landlady and the heroic Legend of John Henry had the audience laughing out loud all the while agog at the brilliant musicianship of Noonan and Matthew Bourne (keyboards). Pecos Bill (howl like a coyote Noonan!) and Silkie from the Sea confirmed what many of us suspected to be the case…Noonan is bonkers!
Resting his larynx, the New Yorker challenged Bourne to a bout of instrumental improv. Last year’s match-up was won, as conceded by Noonan, by Brit Bourne and this re-match couldn’t separate them. Perhaps next time – if agreement can be reached over respective purses – it could be televised live (pay per view?). Sean Noonan in concert is an experience. Get in training now and be ready to take on all Noonan can throw at you. One thing is for certain – Noonan will be up in the mountains right now preparing for his return to the Bridge Hotel.
A Jazz North East & Splinter presentation.
Next week’s Splinter session features the Redemption Quartet.
