Bebop Spoken There

Tomorrow night - Thursday Feb. 2 - at Corner House.

Jazz North East's latest offering must surely be a contender for Gig of the Year before even a note is blown!
I've had the privilege of hearing Simon Spillett at York's Early Music Centre and also at the King's Head in Crouch End. On both occasions he blew up the proverbial storm giving a display of saxophone technique that makes the adjective prodigious seem inadequate!
And yet on ballads he can and does display great sensitivity - I still recall his version of I Thought About You from the York gig with great affection. He may have started out as a Tubby Hayes clone but these days he's very much his own man without deserting the tradition of hard bop modern jazz.
With Simon is the Paul Edis Trio - Edis (pno); Mick Shoulder (bs); Adam Sinclair (dms). The Edis Trio are more or less the Jazz North East house band these days ably maintaining the high standards set by the trios of Malcolm Saul and Bill Harper in days of yore.
This is one gig that no one should miss!
Simon Spillett with the Paul Edis Trio, Corner House Hotel, Heaton Rd., Newcastle, 8:00pm. £10/£8/£4.Thursday Feb. 2.
Lance.
