Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Kate Peters Septet @ Hoochie Coochie - Thursday Feb. 9

Kate Peters (vcls); Ian Chalk (tpt); Matt Anderson (ten); Aubin Vanns (gtr); Zezo Olimpio (pno); John Marley (bs); Sam Gardner (dms).
"Every mornin' finds me Moanin'" sang Kate Peters setting the scene for an impressive performance that had no one in the audience moanin'!
The girl's got a great voice - raucous at the edges, smooth at the centre and full of soul. Her scat choruses on a par with the instrumentalists.
After the mindblowing Moanin', Around The World seemed  incongruous and somewhat lugubrious.
More Songbook material - Summertime, Love For Sale - Gershwin and Porter wrote thousands of songs, why does it always come down to these two? Nevertheless, they were sung well and Chalk's trumpet playing was outstanding throughout. Guitarist Vanns, despite being clipped for a parking ticket outside the venue, soloed impressively although it was awhile before he got the volume at an audible level.
The second set was a whole different ball game. The material more contemporary - Radiohead, Beatles etc. I love the line in She's Leaving Home - "Meeting a man from the motor trade".  Kate did some paint stripping vocalistics in this set, her breath control is something else.
The Way You Look Tonight, after a tenor intro (Matt Anderson seemed more restrained than usual tonight), took off over a fast shuffle rhythm with drummer Gardner driving it on.
Gardner had a powerhouse feature earlier in the set that knocked everyone out and, along with Marley and Olympio, kept it all together.
One thing I like about this band is that everybody doesn't solo on every number and it doesn't end up with the inevitable round of fours!
Come back soon.
Lance
