Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Claude Calling.

Some of you may remember the Big Ben Suite we tried at the Sage a few years ago, so basically this idea came from that. This new ensemble will work around the idea of getting a great big piece which we can then perform live somewhere e.g. festival, concert. I will be personally writing for the members, their strength and musical preferences and trying to bring it all together into one big work/suite. Hopefully we'll even record it at some point.
The idea is to keep it as free as possible, so all instruments are welcome, the more bizarre the better, heh, heh, heh! Voices that want to work as instruments/part of a section are also welcome (we had some of these at the Big Ben and worked like a charm). Playing level doesn't really matter since we'll precisely work around the strengths of each player. So you can either play solos or be a part of a section, whatever makes you comfortable, but we need the numbers to be high since then we can achieve more colors, counterpoint and keep the music interesting and diverse.
We've tried to keep the fees to a minimum, but we need to pay for printing, ink and of course the many hours of writing.
I hope there's a lot of interest for this because this would be quite an interesting project to develop, not to mention quite unique!
