Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rendezvous Jazz @ St. Joseph's CMS Club, Birtley. April 7th

Maureen Hall (vocals), Iain McAulay (trombone, trumpet & vocals), Derek Fleck (clarinet), Mac Smith (keyboards), John Robinson (double bass) & Jim McKeown (drums) Birtley Jazz Club in St.Joseph's on a beautiful spring evening was too good an offer to resist. Two months after the band's scheduled appearance at St.Joseph's was cancelled Maureen Hall's Rendezvous Jazz turned up to play for the hard core regulars. Amiable trombone man Iain McAulay sang and played some great trombone on Stormy Monday and bandleader Hall drew attention to his recently aquired new car number plate - KI9 ORY - as the band blazed a trail on Muskrat Ramble. Hall herself belted it out on Mean to Me and showed her feeling for a gospel tune in singing We Shall Walk Through the Streets of the City. Laconic clarinet veteran Derek Fleck produced a rasping vibrato on Summertime as McAulay switched to trumpet. The rhythm section is well-honed; Jim McKeown never missed a beat, likewise hang-dog bassist John Robinson and Mac Smith played some tasty piano. Hall enjoyed herself on Dinah and Some of These Days and the audience enjoyed the night of jazz that is Jazz in Birtley. Next month's session is on Thursday 5th May featuring the Mississippi Dreamboats. Russell
