Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Pub With No Beer Maine Street Jazzmen @ Rosie Malone's.

Ray Harley (tpt); Jim McBriarty (clt/sop/vcl); Herbie Hudson (tmb/vcl/hca); George Richardson (pno); Alan Rudd (bs); Mike Humble (dms); Olive Rudd (vcl). OMG! was the reaction of myself and fellow devotees when we discovered there was NO BITTER on at the pumps! Many left for climes that may have been jazzless but at least offered succour to the sucker in search of a chalice of the Holy Grail. However, after I suffered a flagon of Foster's Lager, the Guvner succeeded in producing Oxford Gold from the dormant engine. At last it was game on. On stage Olive paid tribute to the glorious weather with a rendition of Blue Skies. Later our girl did good on You Can Depend on Me and Just Friends. Jim sang Avalon and Varsity Drag his vocal timbre as sparkling as his deep blue soprano sax. On piano George also kept things swinging - ignore the caption in the photo these guys don't fall asleep on the job (if you'll pardon the expression!) Herbie played tailgate and blew harp and sang, Alan Rudd compensated for the lack of a bass drum whilst Mike Humble played as though bass drums were a bit of a luxury. Lance.
