Yes, I’m still wondering if I was seeing things on television tonight, when Hugh Laurie appeared on Jools Holland’s BBC2 music programme, playing jazz piano. And here was me thinking he was a comedian and television presenter. Apparently he’s been interested in jazz since he was a child. He gave us quite a tasty version of Swanee River, accompanied by bass, drums, guitar, sax (sorry Lance, don’t know if it was tenor or what) and clarinet. I believe he’s even made a record, or did I hear correctly?
Anyway, you can check it all out on Friday, when there’s the extended version of ‘Later’ at 12.10am on BBC2.

I haven't heard Hugh Laurie play but another comedian who was also a superb jazz pianist was the late great Dudley Moore.
I think it helps to have a sense of humour when you play jazz.
The album is called, I think, "Let Them Talk." he sings a lot of blues on it.
Some folk may trash it but the guy is putting his mouth where his heart is - and his money.
If this helps to attracts a wider audience to jazz and blues then so be it and, actually, he's okay!
Dudley Moore, of course, was a jazz pianist long before he became an actor/comedian.
Lots of Hugh on utube playing piano in Jeeves and Wooster.
Hugh Laurie always used to play the piano in "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" too...
