The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Second Coming - or was it the third or fourth? Ray Harley and the Maine Street Jazzmen @ Rosie's.

Even without Ray Harley the Maine Street boys play an almost unbeatable brand of Dixieland. With Ray they are unbeatable!
This afternoon they kicked the gong around like as though it was Armageddon around the corner rather than King Street. Ray and Herbie going for gold on every solo. Barry, depping for Jimmy Mack, was as smooth as a pint of Black Velvet with a raw oyster chaser. On piano, Malcolm wasn't smooth at all whilst Mike Humble para-diddled them off to Gloryland on Moose March. Muscrat Ramble did indeed ramble with vocal from Herbie and punchy solo's from all. One observation - Herbie sang It Ain't No Sin and did indeed sing it well. However, I think Olive should take a chorus as well - better imagery re dancing around in their bones!
What Olive did sing was All of Me, Eenie Meenie Miney Mo, You Can Depend on Me, I Got Rhythm. The Eenie Meenie song - new to me - written in 1935 by Johnny Mercer and Matty Malneck swung along nicely.
What can I say? Thursday afternoon at Rosie's - the only game in town.
