This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mo is 'The Most' @ the Maggi

With Mo and her band what you hear is what you get. At the Cherry Tree it's the smooth, sophisticated lounge singer. In a jazz club such as Blaydon it's the cool jazz bird. At the Maggi Bank - The Magnesia Bank, to be correct - one of North Shield's finest watering holes you get the screaming rock chick. Whichever mode you catch her in there is one common denominator - the blues. Mo wouldn't sing Happy Birthday without those blues drenched sounds emerging.
Today they were in full flight. She met up with Muddy Waters and B.B. King - probably at a crossroads in Georgia - Let the good times roll with Louis Jordan and gave Peggy Lee Fever.
Whoosh! this was one crazy afternoon. Her version of Hound Dog would give Elvis something to think about!
Behind Mo the guys did the biz. Rod, in slide/bottleneck mode, played like he'd been drinking muddy water whilst sleeping in a hollow log. Those blues chords erupted from the Fenders in just about every inversion known below the Mason/Dixon Line - not to mention a few from the south side of Chicago. Big Neil kept it all rooted in Memphis whilst Lloyd is a metronomic monster who gets in there and rocks his socks off (had to be careful with that sentence!)
Memorable, but why do the ferries have to drop anchor at 6:00pm on a Sunday?
Still I was marooned in good company and took the long way home on the Metro although really it should have been on Route 66!
