The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. A Nostalgia Trip with Colin Aitchison.

Colin has put together a collection of 40s/50s onwards, mainly big band clips, on YouTube that are well worth taking a look at. I was delighted to see and hear Johnny Desmond singing "Polka Dots and Moonbeams with the Ray McKinley Band of the 1950s. There's even a clip of Ivy Benson and her all-girls band. Ivy could play a fair bit alto à la Jimmy Dorsey.

On The Ivy Benson clip it mentions Keith Massey (film camera) He lives in the next village to me, and is an ex neighbour...small world eh? I see it was presented by Sheila Tracey who we never hear of nowadays. Johnny Desmond had a lovely easy voice, makes you weep for what we have lost.

Remember "Blue Smoke" that tape I sent you long ago (and faraway)of Desmond acc by Tony Mottola on guitar?
That, to me, was one of the all-time great albums not least because of the guitar backing. Didn't know much about Tony Mottola at the time but he was a nice guitarist. I've since discovered he did a lot of session work and was in much demand in the studios. Desmond of course was up there with the best.
Roly probably knows more about Mottola.
