Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Jazz

Right there with Liz on this one. The Jazz, whilst it had the unenviable task of attempting to be all things to all men (and women), nevertheless managed to hit that happy medium of covering most persuasions. It was a rare hour that I didn't find at least 45 minutes of excellence. At present it continues on cable and on-line but without any presenters. There is nothing more annoying than to hear a track you like and not know who it is by. What we need is someone to hijack a boat and set up a jazz pirate radio station. What upsets me is that only days before, they were announcing their large listening audience; obviously the bosses at Capital Radio weren't among the listeners and nor, it would seem, were the potential advertisers. How sad that music such as ours is in the hands of the men (and women) in suits.

I particularly miss sundays; Ramsey Lewis, Jackie Dankworth, digby thingy, Campbell Burnup, Courtney Pine they all played my kind of music. to make matters worse Humph has retired from Radio Two jazz. Tell ya what Lance, any time you fancy hijacking that boat I'll join you and I'll bring my rare records. I've got 'Buddy Rich Plays Quiet' 'Bunny Berigan Gets Started' 'Miles Davis Plays Maynard Ferguson' - I've even got a Charlie Parker CD without any alternatives takes so what d'ya say?

A spell check would take away the spontaneity and spontaneity has always been at the heart of jazz.
You could always consult Mr Webster's Dictionary - they say it's just too marvelous for words.
