Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Press release: BBC Introducing One to Watch's Marina Josephina brings 10-piece jazz-soul band to Newcastle's PILGRIM

Teesside singer-songwriter Marina Josephina will headline PILGRIM,* the 250-capacity soul and jazz venue on Newcastle's Pilgrim Street, on Thursday 19 November, fronting a 10-piece band.

Named one of BBC Introducing North East's Ones to Watch for 2025, Marina writes neo-soul that pulls together jazz, soul and R&B with a pop edge. Her songs deal with love, loss, mental health and female empowerment, and she names Corinne Bailey Rae, Amy Winehouse, RAYE, Nectar Woode and Hope Winter among her influences.

Her live show has taken her to Kendal Calling, Sound City, The Great Escape and Soundwaves, and onto bills supporting soul great Alexander O'Neal and Brooke Combe.

Kate Bond plays an acoustic set. Born in Bradford, Kate began her career in Newcastle, where she was BBC Introducing's tip for 2022 and co-founded NEWISM (North East Women in Soul Music). Now based in London, she has had plays on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music and runs the FUSOUL new-artist nights.

Opening the night is North East singer Frannie Mac.
