Singer-composer Christine Tobin launches her latest album, Pseudologia Fantastica at World Heart Beat in Nine Elms on Saturday November 21 as part of EFG London Jazz Festival.
Meaning
‘pathological liar’ Pseudologia Fantastica is a collection of eighteen short
pieces that navigate the current sea of disinformation and
misappropriation of new technologies.
“Over recent years our perception of the world and sense of reality, of what is true or false is gradually unravelling,” says Tobin. “It has been eroded with the emergence of new phrases such as ‘alternative facts’, and a rolling, bludgeoning, narrative where all is back to front and upside down.”
UK Jazz News
has described the album and Tobin’s need to create such a work as “heroic”.
And reviewing
Pseudologia Fantastica for Jazzviews, Jon Vernon wrote: “Tobin has delivered
some wonderful music during her career but perhaps nothing quite so important
as this.”
For the album
launch Tobin will be joined by the two musicians who assisted her in the
recording, with Kate Shortt playing cello and Phil Robson contributing guitar
and electronics. As well as spoken word and her acclaimed, distinctive and
darkly affecting singing voice, the album features Tobin on keyboards,
electronics and tongue drum.
Conceived and
recorded with the support of the Improvised Music Company’s BAN BAM commissions
award, Pseudologia Fantastica, says Tobin, “is a dedication to those who are
suffering in these times, a contribution to the resistance and a prayer for a
kinder future.”
Pseudologia Fantastica is released on Trail Belle Records and is available via BANDCAMP.
