Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Alberto Chiozzi Quintet - Blue Friday (Euritmus Records)

Alberto Chiozzi (drums, leader); Tom Kirkpatrick (trumpet); Alberto Bernicci (alto sax); Nico Menci (piano); Luca Pisani (bass)

Born in Verona but resident in NYC since 2021 Chiozzi has an imposing cv that includes touring Europe with Samara Joy, collaborating with Pasquale Grasso* and appearances at Smalls, Mezzrow and Ornithology.

Blue Friday brings together five musicians clearly at home with the bebop language in the traditional bop line-up of trumpet, alto, piano, bass and drums. Of the six numbers three are from the fertile musical mind of Kenny Dorham with one each from Joe Henderson, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis - jazz royalty all.

However, this isn't an updated form of 'mouldy figgery' rather a reflection of the past  played by musicians of today and giving it their own identity through their solos.

The format is what one might expect - solo permutations, fours 'twixt horns and drums, leader Chiozzi dropping bombs behind the soloists booting them on to greater heights

To add a touch of authenticity, Chiozzi uses the famous Charlie Parker intro to All the Things You Are as the intro to Dorham's Prince Albert.

'Bird Lives!' - thanks to the Alberto Chiozzi Quintet. Lance

* Chiozzi can be seen with Grasso playing on a session from Rossano Sportiello's flat ‐ episode #121-- HERE.

Blue Friday (Kenny Dorham - 1961); Philly Twist (Kenny Dorham - 1964); Short Story (Joe Henderson - 1963); Segment (Charlie Parker - 1949); Prince Albert (Kenny Dorham - 1955); Tune Up (Miles Davis - 1953)
