The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Lydia Rae Quintet @ Central Bar, Gateshead - July 5

An unknown quantity (to BSH), Lydia Rae was making her Central Bar debut in the company of a band of A-listers. Pianist Ben Lawrence, bassist Andy Champion and drummer John Bradford were familiar faces: between them they have appeared at countless venues across the region. As an award-winning musician at the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival, tenor saxophonist Sam Lightwing, from west of the Pennines, wasn't entirely unknown. 

Confessing to be being a little nervous (nothing wrong with that), Ms Rae sang a selection of show tunes, GASbook numbers and original compositions. If I Were a Bell (from Guys and Dolls), My Favorite Things (The Sound of Music), You Go to My Head, all sung without recourse to sheet music or iPad, it was clear Lydia Rae had done her homework. 

You and the Night and the Music (from Revenge with Music), Blossom Dearie's Sunday Afternoon, a vibrant A Lot of Livin' to Do, it was refreshing to listen to a young musician taking on such material. And on this evidence, supported by the aforementioned 'local' A-listers, we're likely to be hearing a lot more from Lydia Rae.    

Sam Lightwing's patch over the Pennines sees him appearing on a regular basis at Stockport's Moor Club. Cast iron, straight-down-the-middle tenor playing, this afternoon foil to Lydia Rae, it would be good to hear Lightwing leading a session. A trip to Stockport, anyone?

Lydia Rae is a composer - Stop By and So Clearly Wanted were on the set list here at Central Bar - and, with Ben Lawrence arranging some of the numbers, there is a promising singer-pianist partnership in the making. Russell
