Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Peter Bevan remembers Tony Haynes

(Peter Bevan sent me the following remembrance of Tony Haynes who passed away on Sept. 17 last year) as addition to Tny Haynes' obituary posted HERE):

Firstly, Tony's Grand Union Orchestra also appeared at Darlington Arts Centre in February 1987 for a week's residency giving workshops for schools and a concert on 18 February - flyer attached. I don't have a note of the musicians although I think it's very likely Keith Morris was among them.

I first met Tony in 1979 when he was commissioned by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to investigate opportunities for creative musicians. I was a member of the Advisory Committee. The research was carried out in 1979/1980 although it wasn't published until 1988 (I can't remember why there was such a delay). Keith Morris was one of Tony's local correspondents.

Tony, with John Cumming, also devised a wonderful show, Jelly Roll Soul, naturally enough about Jelly Roll
Morton which I see toured for 14 weeks, courtesy of the Arts Council. Possibly it appeared in Newcastle or elsewhere in the North East but at the time I was living on Merseyside and saw it at the Theatr Clwyd in Mold. I've attached my review from the Liverpool Daily Post.

Hope this is all of interest. Peter
