This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Moanin' at Central (Feb. 11)

Last week Merlin Roxby knocked out some ragtime numbers, this afternoon a Newcastle University mathematics student picked out Moanin' followed by Take Five. The Challen upright standing on the concourse at Newcastle Central Station is in need of some TLC, nevertheless, it's worth stopping by to listen to anyone playing some jazz in such a public space. 

Our first year student bemoaned the fact that he doesn't have access to NU's music department. More's the shame. Your correspondent enquired of our pianist...did he know about the Black Swan jam session? He didn't. He didn't know about Newcastle Arts Centre. He didn't know about BSH. He does now! Let's hope our maths undergraduate makes it on down to the Black Swan sometime (the next jam is a week tonight, Tuesday  Feb. 18). See you there! Russell
