This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Noah Preminger - Ballads (Chill Tone Records)

Noah Preminger (tenor sax); Julian Shore (piano); Kim Cass (bass); Allan Mednard (drums)

What can I say? Preminger's sound is absolutely gorgeous - tonewise he beats Stan Getz at his own game. If you doubt me, check out Stan's Mood. It really is a tone to die for. Apart from Stan's Mood, Gershwin's Someone to Watch Over me and Carry me Ohio which I thought was a college football song but isn't, Preminger composed the other four tracks.

It's an appropriate album for St Val's Day - the romance oozes out of every track, every solo, every note. It beats a bunch of roses and a bottle of Prosecco hands down.

Apart from Preminger's seductive sax sound he plays some pretty nifty bop phrases without losing the plot. Shore too is worthy of the good saint's blessing whilst Cass and Mednard do nothing to mar the prevalent mood which is that four letter word - love.. 

It's absolutely beautiful, the only downer is that St. Valentine's Day is but once a year and it's unlikely to get many plays on St. Patrick's Day.

Still that's neither here nor there - the sound will stay with you forever or at least until you fall asleep. Lance
