Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Remembering Glenn Cartlidge @ the Railway, Stockport - June 18

© Jeff Pritchard
This was a special event to remember Glenn Cartlidge, a much loved guitarist who recently passed away at the age of 72. There were many musicians in attendance and taking a major part in the proceedings was Mike Hope who as well as blowing some great tenor sax also did a fine job announcing the tunes

During the first half Mike was joined by Richard Iles on flugelhorn, Andy Hulme guitar, Olly Collins bass, Andrzej Baranek piano and Eryl Roberts drums. The opening number was a lively rendition of Monk’s Straight No Chaser and there were solos from everyone with Andy Hulme’s being one of the evening's highspots. By the end of the first set the room had filled up and as Fats Waller used to say The Joint was Jumpin’.

To begin the second half we heard from the guitar duo of Trefor Owen and Andy Hulme who played Jerome Kern’s Yesterdays followed by Morning of the Carnival. This unit has been together for a long time and it's a partnership that works well. Then it was time for more  musicians to appear, Adam Hutchìns on piano, Ken Marley on bass and a drummer who I think was called Iyla. I decided to join Mike Hope and give my soprano sax a workout on Tenor Madness an experience I think I would have enjoyed more if my chops had been in better shape!  There were no other sax players present so Mike called to the bandstand pianoman Richard Wetherall and drummer Dave Walsh .

The rest of the evening passed far too quickly with the closing number being a surprising choice Body and Soul.

The next jazz event at the Railway is on June 23 with the Richard Wetherall Trio.

Straight No Chaser; Days of Wine and Roses; Bernie’s Tune; Misty; Lester Leaps In; Yesterdays; Morning of the Carnival; Tenor Madness; Honeysuckle Rose; The Way You Look Tonight; I'll Remember April; Body and Soul.
