Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Edison Herbert Trio @ The Vault, Darlington - June 1

Edison Herbert (guitar); Emlyn Vaughan (bass guitar); Miles Pillinger (drums)

An 'away day' in Darlington. Lunchtime at St Augustine's listening to Rico Tomasso's Swing Company followed by a pint of Old Peculier in Number Twenty 2 (the musicians' post-gig hang) and onto an early evening gig at the Vault on East Row. Edison Herbert was making a popular return visit to the Market Place venue and several fans made the effort to get along, although they were well aware it wouldn't be a listening crowd...

Guitarist Edison Herbert and six-string bassist Emlyn Vaughan made the short trip from Leeds, meeting up with recent graduate drummer Miles Pillinger to play two sets of guitar-led popular jazz numbers. Just FriendsIn a Sentimental Mood (Emlyn Vaughan's six-string bass solo), a funky Summertime, a jaunty My Little Suede ShoesWhen Sunny Gets Blue, Herbert is one slick operator. The affable Herbert isn't one for pyrotechnics, the groove is the thing. A blues thing now and again, Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise (Pillinger's effective drum solo), Rollins-esque calypso, if Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and George Benson are your bag, be sure to check out Mr. Edison Herbert.
