A small, but attentive, audience enjoyed two sets by one of the newer singers on the local scene. I first heard Eva Fox at the Globe's Christmas Party last December and I was impressed. In the meantime she's made sporadic appearances at the Black Swan jam sessions but this was the first time I'd heard her 'in the spotlight' for the entire evening.
A pleasing stage presence quickly had 'the crowd' on her side and we were treated to a choice selection of standards as well as Melody Gardot's Your Heart is as Black as Night. This was, perhaps, my favourite as, not having heard Gardot's version, I could only judge it by what I was hearing. With the GASbook classics, irrespective of who the singer is, it's difficult not to draw comparisions - even unconsciously - with the originals.
However, I'm pleased to note that Fox is well on her way to developing her own voice so watch this space.
Of course behind every good singer there's sympathetic accompaniment and you could get few better than 'the Jazz Guys'. Law, Grainger and Johnston are the ideal trio for these situations and with only the occasional lack of cohesion late on in the second set all of the four on stage thought and acted as one.
The Jazz Guys also had an instrumental workout on St. Thomas with Johnston soloing impressively, Law, as he had been all evening, at the peak of his creativity and the rock solid Grainger holding it all together. Lance
