The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Serge Chaloff：Blue Serge


The March issue of Jazzwise draws attention to this album by possibly the greatest jazz baritone  jazz sax player of that era - maybe any era!

The anchor man of Woody's four brothers, Serge had a light fluency on baritone that lifted the instrument's lugubrious past to a state where, in the hands of Serge Chaloff, it sounded as cool as his fellow 'brother' Getz did on tenor.

What great outfits those Herman herds were! Getz, Cohn, Steward, Serge, Sonny Berman, Bill Harris et al. I'm open for argument but, Herman outswung Kenton hands down as well as pushing Basie to a photo finish. And then there was Duke...

And,when you aren't listening to Chaloff, you've got Sonny Clark on piano.

Stairway to the Stars is perhaps the most emotional baritone solo that I've ever heard.

If you're compiling a must have jazz bucket list then Blue Serge is as essential as are the usual suspects such as Miles, Brubeck, Mingus etc. Lance
