There can be few musicians on the local scene who have a more pleasing and infectious personality than Pete Tanton. He engages easily with the audience making them and himself feel at home with each other.
Of course I can think of a few musicians who also have a pleasing personality - no names no pack drill - but little else.
Tanton is far removed from that bracket. The pleasing personality is backed up with laid-back singing and trumpet playing that emulates the subject of the concert without losing his own identity.
The sold out gig (book early for future events) featured a choice selection of standards drawn from the Chet Baker Sings albums recorded back in the 1950s. Interspersed with anecdotes related to the late trumpet player we heard: But Not for Me; Time After Time; My Funny Valentine; I Fall in Love Too Easily; There Will Never be Another You; That Old Feeling and Look for the Silver Lining.
This was the epitome of cool: Law, as ever the sensitive accompanist and subtle soloist. Andy, the still undefeated Champion of the bass world. John Bradford doing the biz on drums. Now here's a thought, can anyone remember a gig when John wasn't on drums? That's how much he's in demand.
First and foremost however, Pete Tanton. Let's hope he doesn't fall, jump or get pushed out of a window in Amsterdam - or anywhere else for that matter.
