Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Trefor Owen @ the Railway, Stockport - June 21

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Trefor Owen, Andy Hulme (guitars)

I was expecting Trefor to be fronting his usual line-up of two guitars, bass and tenor sax but tonight there was only two guitarists on the bandstand. Not sure why this occurred but it meant that we heard a grand total of fifteen tunes. We got to hear a varied selection of numbers ranging from show tunes, Wes Montgomery compositions and some well known standards.

I think the duo sounded best playing the bossa nova tunes Once I Loved and Black Orpheus. I also liked their version of the Oscar Pettiford blues Blues In the Closet. I really can’t think of much else to add except that if you like the sound of two guitars you will like the way these two musicians operate.

The next jazz gig at the Railway is on Sunday June 26 at 9pm with Richard Weatherall

I Thought About You; Black Orpheus; Dreamsville; How About You?; Once I Loved; Yesterdays; Autumn in New York; Four on Six; Road Song; Alone Together; Wives and Lovers; But Beautiful; East of the Sun; How Insensitive; Blues In The Closet - Mike Farmer
