Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Melissa Stylianou featuring Gene Bertoncini & Ike Sturm - Dream Dancing

Melissa Stylianou (vocals); Ike Sturm (bass); Gene Bertoncini (guitar).

A delightful, relaxed album by  a singer, new to me but better known as one third of powerhouse vocal jazz trio Duchess - a group who won the 2022 JJA Vocal Group of the Year award.

This is Melissa's 6th solo album and she takes the opportunity full on to deliver in a soft, cajoling voice - think Blossom or Astrud - what must surely be in the running for jazz vocal album of the year despite the strong competition on either side of the Atlantic.

Apart from the vocals, Bertoncini, 81 at the time of the recording 3 years ago, is outstanding on nylon-strung guitar playing stunning solos and providing sympathetic accompaniment. The voice/guitar duet on My One and Only Love is as mouth watering as the version by Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane. Ike Sturm is another tower of strength - not just on the bass/voice version of  It Could Happen to You but throughout.

A choice selection of standards and an original by Bertoncini - For Chet - make for an album that will never be far from my player, One anomaly, despite the title. Dream Dancing doesn't appear on the album! However, I'm not complaining I wouldn't substitute any of the tracks for any other tune - Lance.

Released by Anzic Records on June 17. CD Release show at Mezzrow Jazz Club, NYC on August 7.

Sweet and Lovely; If You Never Come to me; My Ideal; It Could Happen to You; For Chet; Perdido; Corcovado; Time's A-Wastin'; My One and Only Love; It Might as Well be Spring.
