Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Hexham Jazz Festival - Friday, Saturday & Sunday!

Today, Friday  May 13 marks the start of the 2022 Hexham Jazz Festival. And what a start! This evening's double bill featuring Hot Club du Nord and Paul Edis and Graeme Wilson is sold out! Tomorrow night (Saturday 14) Jo Harrop's eagerly anticipated concert is also sold out! See LL's review of Jo at Hoochie Coochie - what a singer, what a band! And, all of the weekend rover tickets have been snapped up, which means you can still book to catch pianist Dean Stockdale in Hexham Abbey on Saturday evening at ten o'clock, and, Sunday's concerts featuring James Kitchman and Bruno Heinen and the Abbie Finn Trio. If you're thinking of going, be quick, book at: www.queenshall.co.uk or call the box office on 01434 652477.

On Saturday and Sunday Core Music, in association with Hexham Jazz Festival, presents Youth Jazz: Coast to Coast. At three o'clock on Saturday in Hexham Abbey there is a scratch quartet comprising Ferg Kilsby (trumpet), Joe Steels (guitar), Paul Susans (bass) and drummer John Hirst playing standards and a couple of original numbers. At four o'clock, it's Hexham's own, the Tyne Valley Big Band. Highly recommended! Sunday afternoon on the bandstand in the Sele and in Prior's Hall there is a multi-bill of events featuring Chloe Cacau (noon), Asha Nicholson (1:00pm), Vacant Weekend Project (2:00pm), Tiny Steps (3:00pm), QEHS Jazz Band (4:00pm) and at five o'clock, it's the Tyne Valley Youth Big Band

Hexham Jazz Festival, the first for many years, has caught the eye, rather the ear, of jazz fans from the Tyne Valley and further afield. Sold out concerts suggest the organisers have hit the spot. Any proceeds will go towards cancer research, and, like every good jazz festival, there will be a festival beer, brewed especially by the Allendale Brewery. Cheers! Russell
